Dentistry – Access to Emergency Care Summary (ECS) Data – Covid-19 Response
In light of the outbreak of COVID-19 in Scotland, the Scottish Government have informed all Health Boards that they may provide access to the Emergency Care Summary (ECS) System to General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) as part of their Covid-19 response.
This measure is supported by the Scottish General Practitioners’ Committee of the British Medical Association.
Under current Data Protection Legislation, sharing data under the current circumstances would be considered to be in the public task GDPR, Article 6(1)(e), and necessary for reasons of public interest in the area of public health, GDPR, Article 9(2)(i).
GDPs, where it is necessary for the delivery of your care will access your Emergency Care Summary which contains:
- Your name
- Your date of birth
- The name of your GP surgery
- An identifying number called a CHI number
- Information about any medicines prescribed by your GP surgery
- Any bad reactions you’ve had to medicines that your GP knows about
For some people there will be additional information from your GP record available, this is contained in the Key Information Summary (KIS), your GP will have discussed this information with you and sought your consent.
Please be assured that the NHS stores your Emergency Care Summary electronically using the highest standards of security.
All staff accessing the Emergency Care Summary system have professional and contractual obligations of confidentiality.
A record is kept of everyone who has looked at your Emergency Care Summary.
Please speak to your GDPs if you have any concerns regarding this.

In 2015, the practice relocated to the Houldsworth Centre Wishaw. Here we can offer disabled access as well as, spacious, comfortable and bright surroundings for our staff and patients. A number of healthcare and community services are available in the centre.

Excellent dental practice, been coming to the practice for a while now and literally the best dentist I’ve ever been to, plus the only dentist I know with a fantastic view out the window.

After years of discomfort with my partial upper denture, Sarah referred me for an assessment of my suitability for implant surgery. I am now the proud owner of an implant retained upper denture and the difference it’s made is remarkable. Although an expensive option I would recommend anyone considering this treatment to go ahead if possible. Huge thanks to Sarah and the team at Belhaven Dental for supporting me through the process.
